Written by Kōhei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero fantasy manga that has sold close to a 100 million copies worldwide. Charting the journey of Izuku Midoriya as he navigates the trials and tribulations of the world of superheroes around him, the manga’s stratospheric popularity has spawned a multimedia franchise. The anime adaptation of this story has been equally popular and is now in its seventh season. 

My Hero Academia is set in a world where most people have superpowers, which are referred to as quirks. People who use their quirks for good are labeled heroes whilst individuals who employ quirks for nefarious activities are broadly considered villains. It is in this hypercompetitive world that we find our protagonist Izuku Midoriya, a young man who dreams of becoming a hero despite not having any quirks. With such lofty dreams, Izuku’s friends often make fun of him but Izuku marches on, undeterred. 

A chance encounter with his idol and the greatest hero of all time, All Might, sees Izuku inherit his idol’s quirk. However, fate has other plans as All Might’s nemesis All for One fatally injures the greatest superhero in an epic battle, putting him out of action. Now chosen as the successor for One for All, Izuku joins the top-ranking hero academy, U.A. High School, as he and his friends begin their quest to take down All for One and his League of Villains.

Inspired by American superhero franchises, My Hero Academia’s greatest strength are its characters. The main character, Izuku Midoriya transforms from being insecure and timid to a selfless and confident hero capable of taking down high powered villains. Along for the journey is his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo, who is a hot head in his own right, channeling his aggression into a quirk that grants him the ability to create explosions. Izuku and Katsuki lead a team of students against Tenko Shimura, All for One’s chosen apprentice who has the ability to disintegrate people with touch. 

Aside from its great characters, the series is a visual masterclass in fantastic superhero action. The battles are highly kinetic and one feels every single punch whilst witnessing heroes and villains duel it out on the streets. Equally impressive is the character design that gives each character his or her own unique feel. Seamless character motion and rich colors in each frame make the experience even better. With memorable characters, moving character arcs and a rich, poignant story, My Hero Academia is a visual and visceral delight.
