DC Comics Green Lantern Collection

Alongside the obvious heavyweights of Batman, Superman and the Joker; one unlikely character that remains fairly popular today in the DC pantheon of heroes is Green Lantern. Ever since the first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, made his debut in All-American Comics in 1940, what began as a minor character would transform into a franchise in and of itself, with a 90 year history that continues unabashedly to date.

The name Green Lantern has been given to several heroes, both human and alien, appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. These individuals fight intergalactic evil with the aid of cosmic rings that create solid constructs of whatever the user imagines. The rings also grant Lanterns a variety of extraordinary powers (including flight, space travel and invulnerability), all of which come from imagination, fearlessness, and the electromagnetic spectrum of emotional willpower. The characters are typically depicted as members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement agency that has wide ranging powers but some Lanterns also appear as antagonists with nefarious goals (the Sinestro Corps is one such group). While Scott was the first Lantern to be introduced, it is later iterations of Hal Jordan and John Stewart who remain the most popular today.

The unique abilities of Green Lanterns have allowed the characters to be used in a variety of situations where their constructs can be of immense help. The characters’ vast adventures have involved the Green Lantern Corps, the Justice League, the JSA and other team iterations in all of DC media.

With one widely panned live action solo film starring Ryan Reynolds and multiple cameos in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Green Lantern has had a less than stellar history on the big screen. But all that has changed in the new DCU where the Guy Gardner Green Lantern is not only an important part of the new Superman film but Hal Jordan and John Stewart iterations have their own show coming to HBOMax next year. Concurrently, the character has thrived in the animated medium with multiple film and series appearances for the past five decades.
