Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama’s manga that began in 1984, has birthed a sprawling media franchise in the four decades after its release. Not only has the manga been published in over 40 countries, the anime inspired by it has also been seen by millions across the globe. With hundreds of millions copies sold worldwide, Dragon Ball remains the biggest anime success out of Japan to date.

Making sense of the sprawling Dragon Ball franchise

The anime notwithstanding, the roots of Dragon Ball anime can be traced back to its first series, titled Dragon Ball, that ran from 1986 to 1989. Dragon Ball Z then followed between 1989 and 1996 and then came Dragon Ball GT that ran for one more year. A few more series followed, the latest being Dragon Ball Daima that ended last year.

A whopping 21 animated Dragon Ball films have been released to date, each being a commercial success. In addition, there have been three TV specials as well. A live action Hollywood adaptation of the franchise, starring Justin Chatwin as Goku, was released in 2009 and was an unmitigated disaster.
