Who is Green Lantern?

The name Green Lantern has been given to several heroes, both human and alien, appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. These individuals fight intergalactic evil with the aid of cosmic rings that create solid constructs of whatever the user imagines. The rings also grant Lanterns a variety of extraordinary powers (including flight, space travel and invulnerability), all of which come from imagination, fearlessness, and the electromagnetic spectrum of emotional willpower. The characters are typically depicted as members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement agency that has wide ranging powers but some Lanterns also appear as antagonists with nefarious goals (the Sinestro Corps is one such group). While Scott was the first Lantern to be introduced, it is later iterations of Hal Jordan and John Stewart who remain the most popular today.

Hal Jordan, the fearless test pilot created by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane, debuted in 1959 and ushered in the modern era of the character. John Stewart, an architect and former Marine, followed in 1971 as one of mainstream comics' first Black superheroes.

Every Lantern ring is powered by a different emotion, with each one belonging to its own corps. Green stands for willpower, yellow for fear, red for rage, orange for avarice, blue for hope, indigo for compassion, violet for love, white for life and black for death. This emotional spectrum is the reason Green Lantern jewelry comes in so many colors.

The unique abilities of Green Lanterns have allowed the characters to be used in a variety of situations where their constructs can be of immense help. The characters’ vast adventures have involved the Green Lantern Corps, the Justice League, the JSA and other team iterations in all of DC media.

With one widely panned live action solo film starring Ryan Reynolds and multiple cameos in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Green Lantern has had a less than stellar history on the big screen. But all that has changed in the new DCU where the Guy Gardner Green Lantern is not only an important part of the new Superman film but Hal Jordan and John Stewart iterations have their own show, Lanterns, which premiered on HBO Max in August 2026. Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, the series gives the Corps a spotlight it has never had on television. Concurrently, the character has thrived in the animated medium with multiple film and series appearances for the past five decades.
