The helm of Darth Vader, reminiscent of a skull in the form of durasteel doused in black. An image of intimidation and power, but that is only how it looks on the outside. The helm itself is one part of the life support system within his armor. He is an icon of evil, but there is more to the mask than meets the eye.

The some of the internal workings inside the helmet include many needles inserted into his flesh to monitor and regulate Vader's body temperature, an environmental sensor to evaluate the surroundings for potential hazards, and lenses to filter out light that could cause further injury to his already damaged eyes. It also provided infrared and ultraviolet vision to have complete sight in the dark. After what occurred in the final showdown during Revenge of the Sith, there is no doubt that Vader would need this helmet and his armor to fully function.

Despite the evil aura surrounding the Sith Lord, he may be more machine than man. To continue to live and serve in the Galactic Empire, his helmet can rarely be removed. Until his final moments, this helmet as dark as the universe spread fear in anyone who stood in his presence.
