More than a decade after it was first released, Game of Thrones has become a pop culture milestone unlike anything ever seen before. The tale of intrigue and conspiracy as nine different families seek to control Westeros exploded onto the scene in 2011 and charted new heights with each subsequent season.
Based on the book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones arrived at a near perfect time in the entertainment landscape; audiences had been tired of recycled stories at that time and were desperate for something visceral that would get both their hearts and minds racing. With HBO’s epic production quality, the result was a television series for the ages; one that would match The Sopranos and The Wire for the sheer unparalleled impact it later had on the world.
The best thing about Game of Thrones is undoubtedly how its makers are not afraid to kill any of the protagonists to move the plot forward. Most stories have protagonists with plot armor, ones who cannot die despite the most dire of circumstances. Game of Thrones’ biggest success was its ability to subvert audience expectations regarding the stories’ heroes; good guys could absolutely die and they did so in the most brutal and unforgiving of circumstances.
With Game of Thrones, it has always been the mantra to expect the unexpected. The extreme ways in which some characters are dispatched aside, the series is characterized by insane plot twists, shocking double crosses and an overall sense of writers always being one step ahead of the audience. This is precisely why the series has been so popular, because no one could expect what would happen next. The precise way in which the makers set their chess pieces made for a fantastic story that people were hooked to.
From the stoic Jon Snow to the cold and calculating Cersei Lannister, GoT is populated with fascinating characters who are all formidable in their own right. Equally impressive are the fantastical creatures; from the direwolves of House Stark to the dragons of Daenerys Targaryen. Even more imposing is the Night King and his army of undead White Walkers. From castle politics to sprawling battles involving fire breathing dragons and giants, Game of Thrones set the bar fairly until its middling final season squandered all the momentum.
While the constant skirmishes between the Starks and the Lannisters are highly entertaining, Game of Thrones is in fact a fascinating story about the depths of depravity and evil that men will stoop to for attaining kingship and how lust for power inevitably corrupts and destroys without exception. As if all the war and backstabbing were not dire enough, the series mixes genuine human drama with a captivating, complex story to make a tale for the ages. With the series’s first spinoff, House of the Dragon, debuting to rave reviews and many more spinoffs on the way, it is clear that the world of Westeros is here to stay.
