Scooby Doo and his gang of misfits have been part of the American cultural zeitgeist ever since the first animated series made its way to television in the late 60s. With more than a dozen cartoon series coupled with countless animated and live action films in the last five decades, Scooby Doo is one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in the entire world. Onscreen, the Scooby gang has even partnered with some of Warner Bros most popular characters such as Batman and Looney Tunes.
Even though the entertainment landscape has gone through a monumental shift in the last five decades, this gang of amateur sleuths have endured and Scooby Doo remains one of the most well known animated characters of all time. Audiences the world over love these characters, their shenanigans and their unyielding ability to turn even the most unfortunate situations on its own head.
Each Scooby Doo iteration revolves around four teenage mystery solvers and their dog, a male Great Dane named Scooby Doo. Scooby’s owner and best friend is Shaggy; a stoner who is a little slow and easily scared. Meanwhile, the de facto leader of the gang is the blonde haired Fred who is romantically interested in Daphne; who values her fashion more than anything else. Then there is Velma, a highly intelligent amateur detective who often solves the mystery at the end. The group travel around in the Mystery Machine, often a 1968 Chevrolet Sportvan and go up against monsters, criminals and any other nefarious entity hoping to profit off of others’ misery.
From ‘Zoinks’ to ‘I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids’ Scooby Doo’s impact on pop culture is hard to understate. The franchise’s eternal popularity led TVGuide to label it the fifth greatest TV Cartoon of all time. The endless reruns of the series on Cartoon Network brought new fans into the franchise whilst the two live action films starring top notch Hollywood talent were monumental successes in their own right.
The greatest strength of each iteration of the franchise has been the fact that it has likable characters dropped amidst a mystery that only them working together can unravel. Each member is unique in his or her own way; a stoic and heroic Fred is complemented by cowardly and laid back Shaggy whilst the fashion savvy Daphne has the highly intelligent Velma to back her up. Connecting them all is the joyful and curious Scooby Doo who, along with the kids, always succeeds in getting the bad guy in the end. The gang stumbles in the start, sometimes going their separate ways but comes together to unmask the villain despite towering odds . We love how the team operates, how they play off each other's strengths and how they always manage to value their friendship above everything else.
