Star Wars: Ahsoka is finally here, the latest in a long list of television series that expand this venerable franchise. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had their work cut out for them in the aftermath of the sequel trilogy and against all odds, they have reinvigorated Star Wars to all of its rightful glory. Star Wars: Ahsoka focuses on the fan favorite Ahsoka Tano as she investigates a dangerous threat to the galaxy emerging after the demise of the Empire. 

Ahsoka’s real-life history is as colorful as her onscreen one. One of the few characters to start off from animation into live action, she first appeared in The Clone Wars. This animated series charted the adventures of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader as he took a young Tano under his wing. Fleshing out the relationship between Master and Padawan, the series saw Ahsoka turn into a full fledged Jedi Knight as her master slowly turned to the dark side. The character next appeared in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, a sort of sequel to the The Clone Wars that takes place a decade later. The series saw Ahsoka aid ragtag groups of rebels as they take part in resistance operations against Imperial forces in the aftermath of the fall of the Galactic Republic.

The character’s immense popularity prompted Dave Filoni to introduce the live action version of Ahsoka in the second season of The Mandalorian. Fans always wanted Rosario Dawson to play the character if the opportunity ever arose and Filoni ensured that these wishes were both respected and realized. Dawson plays a pained and experienced Ahsoka, one who is both damaged by her master’s betrayal and old enough to realize that things are not as simple as they are often deemed so. Far from the brash and outspoken Ahsoka we saw in live action, this Ahsoka is a ronin; a solitary knight fighting alone for a cause most don't believe in anymore. Following the positive reception, Dawson would reprise her role in one episode of the The Book of Boba Fett as well. 

The series builds upon the momentum of The Mandalorian, taking place in the same universe and around the same time. Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka is joined by several other popular characters from Star Wars Rebels. Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla, both beloved characters from Rebels, make their live action debut in style. So does Grand Admiral Thrawn, a calculating villain who had also served as the overarching antagonist in Rebels. 

Perhaps the biggest surprise hidden in Ahsoka is Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. Famous for portraying Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in the prequel trilogy, Christensen returned to the franchise after almost two decades in the recent series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Filoni could not let the tragic relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka, which was developed in The Clone Wars go to waste, and thus flashbacks are used to further explore Anakin’s relationship with his Padawan. 

Seeing Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka in live action together is a treat most never thought possible. However, here we are, in 2023 as Disney has made this a reality. Ahsoka is peppered with such exciting moments throughout and speaking as a diehard fan of the franchise, this is nothing less than a dream come true. The series features everything us fans want; fantastic lightsaber duels, exhilarating aerial dogfight sequences and everything else in between. Balancing nostalgia with wit, humor and action; the series is a treat for loyal fans who have stuck with the franchise through both thick and thin.
