The most recognizable comic book hero on the planet, Superman is not only the first superhero of the industry but has been the paragon of Detective Comics (or as it is widely known, DC) since the 1930s.
The Story of Superman
Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman (also known as Kal-El or Clark Kent) first appeared in issue #1 of Action Comics (later to be known as Detective Comics) in 1938. Born on the doomed planet of Krypton, Kal-El was hurriedly smuggled by his parents aboard a spacecraft bound for Earth as the planet exploded around them. Landing in Kansas, this gifted baby was raised by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent who infused in him goodness, humility and a resolve to always help others and save lives. Aided by the knowledge and materials in his spacecraft, this child would grow up to be ‘Superman’. Manufacturing his alter ego to be a mild mannered reporter Clark Kent who works at the Daily Planet, Superman goes up against a myriad of villains as he seeks to protect his city Metropolis and the world from evil.
It is said that the Superman logo is the second most recognizable symbol on the planet, only next to the Christian Cross. Over time, Superman has come to represent the ideal superhero; overpowered, good and incorruptible without fail. Having invulnerability to all things (except those from his home planet of Krypton), super strength, flight and a variety of other assortment of powers; Superman has been adapted by hundreds of artists in his near 90 year journey. The character has undergone transformations in accordance with real world trends but the basis of his myths have more or less remained the same.
Superman in film and other media
With a whopping 7 live action solo films and at least 3 live action team-up movies, Superman has had a fantastic journey on the big screen, not to mention the countless television shows and animated media the Man of Steel has been a part of. 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally saw the Man of Steel sharing the big screen with a pantheon of other DC heroes including Batman and the Flash as he battled his greatest nemesis of all time; Darkseid. With James Gunn beginning the new rebooted DCU with David Corenswet as the Man of Steel in 2025, we have another new decade of fantastic Superman stories coming up on the big screen.
