No other franchise has been as influential for the young adult fantasy genre as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Charting the journey of an orphan boy and his friends as he sets out to avenge his parents’ killing by a Dark Lord, Harry Potter captured our collective imaginations in the 2000s and 2010s, with each successive novel becoming a best selling cultural phenomenon.

The cinematic journey of the franchise so far

There have been a total of eight Harry Potter movies, based on the seven books written by Rowling as the last book was turned into two movies. Impressed by the results of this series which grossed more than 7 billion dollars in theatrical profits alone, Warner did a ‘Hobbit’ here and adapted Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts novel into three more prequel films. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them can be considered an appendix to the main Harry Potter story and it focused on a zoologist and his adventures to document the various magical creatures in the Wizarding world. Warners managed to pump out three such spinoffs before the last film underperformed and more Fantastic Beasts sequels were cancelled. Warners then decided it best to reboot the franchise for its flagship streaming service HBOMax. The series is currently shooting with the plan currently being that each new season will focus on one book.
